  • Jordan Smith Jr. scored 20 points in his college debut Tuesday night, and No. 12 Arkansas buried Arkansas-Pine Bluff 106-61 at Bud Walton Arena. The freshman guard made 7 of 11 shots, all inside the arc, and 6 of 10 free throws. He added four rebounds, two assists and three steals in 28 minutes, per ESPN's box score.

  • Smith and forward Miikka Muurinen, the top two recruits in John Calipari's eight-man signing class, both started, the AP reported. Muurinen scored 10 and fellow freshman Abdou Toure added 12 in their debuts.

Smith wasn't even the top scorer. Georgia transfer Jeremiah Wilkinson had 23, including nine points on 3-pointers during a 25-0 run that followed UAPB's opening basket. Calipari is using Wilkinson mostly off the ball next to Smith, according to SI's Arkansas site, and the two guards set the tone on defense. Wilkinson had five steals and Smith three. Arkansas forced 16 steals, scored 32 points off turnovers and beat the Golden Lions 45-6 on the fast break.

  • The halfcourt offense still needs work. Arkansas went the final 5:55 of the first half without a field goal, and everyone other than Wilkinson made 2 of 11 from three, per SI.

Now the schedule gets real. Arkansas plays No. 9 Virginia in Washington on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET, and the team's account is already calling it a homecoming for Smith. He is from Washington and played high school ball at Paul VI in Virginia. Virginia opened with an 89-60 win over Drexel and held opponents to 31.6% from three last season, per SI.

  • UAPB had no answer for Smith going to the rim. Virginia's defense is built to take that away, which makes Sunday the first real read on Calipari's top freshman.
