West Coast late baseball: Padres survive Rockies, Diamondbacks rally past Marlins

The late Monday baseball window produced a pair of high-leverage wins in the National League West and another damaging loss for Seattle. San Diego edged Colorado 8-7, Arizona rallied past Miami 8-7 and the Los Angeles Angels beat the Mariners 6-4.

The Padres' win was their eighth straight, matching the club's longest streak of the season. Manny Machado and Fernando Tatis Jr. homered, and San Diego moved to 82-68 while staying 2 1/2 games ahead of Arizona for the final National League wild card. The Padres also clinched a fifth consecutive winning season, the first such run in franchise history.

Arizona needed a ninth-inning answer. Corbin Carroll hit a two-run homer with one out in the ninth, turning a three-run deficit into an 8-7 Diamondbacks victory over Miami and keeping Arizona in the wild-card chase.

Seattle's margin narrowed again. Reid Detmers struck out eight over six innings, and Jose Siri and Denzer Guzman drove in two runs apiece as the Angels won 6-4. The Mariners fell to 70-81 and now sit 5 1/2 games behind the AL wild-card line.

The San Francisco Giants also lost 2-1 at St. Louis. Rookie left-hander Quinn Mathews carried a no-hitter into the sixth, struck out eight and allowed one run over 6 2/3 innings for the Cardinals. Alec Burleson's RBI single supplied the winning margin.

Those results leave the West's playoff pressure concentrated on the Padres and Diamondbacks, while Seattle needs an immediate response to keep its season from slipping away.
