October 19 update: severe knee injury and a planned operation; no completed surgery or recovery date announced.
Read source ↗ Iamaleava was hurt against Oregon on October 10. He returned briefly after the initial injury, then missed the second half of UCLA's 17-15 victory. Dieffenbach finished that game and made his first FBS start against Wisconsin, completing 22 of 33 passes for 264 yards.
Ben Bolch reported that Iamaleava finished the season with 982 passing yards, four touchdown passes and four interceptions. He had transferred to UCLA from Tennessee before the 2025 season.
Dieffenbach's performance against Wisconsin gave UCLA another win while its original starter remained sidelined. Chesney praised the replacement quarterback's confidence Monday and singled out his throw to Landon Ellis from near UCLA's own end zone as an important play in the field-position battle.
The Bruins are 6-0 overall and 4-0 in the Big Ten. They host Michigan State at the Rose Bowl on Saturday. No completed surgery or return date was established in Monday's announcement.

Update — October 15, 2026: UCLA lists Nico Iamaleava as out for Saturday’s game against Wisconsin on the Big Ten’s initial October 14 availability report. That establishes his current status for this matchup; it does not supply a final season-long medical determination or a recovery date. The official report also lists Rodrick Pleasant and Jordan Davis as questionable.
The Bruins’ starting quarterback has not been announced in the reporting reviewed for this update. Ty Dieffenbach and Madden Iamaleava remain the options discussed by Bob Chesney. Wisconsin visits Pasadena on October 17 at 7:30 p.m. Eastern.
Earlier reporting — October 13, 2026
UCLA coach Bob Chesney is waiting for doctors to determine Nico Iamaleava's outlook after the quarterback injured his knee against Oregon. Reports that Iamaleava is expected to miss the rest of the season have raised a major question for the unbeaten Bruins, but Chesney did not make that final determination at Monday's media availability.
USA TODAY's Jordan Mendoza reported that CBS Sports first broke the season-ending injury expectation. In his account of Chesney's press conference, the coach said he wanted doctors to make the final call and that further opinions were still being sought.
Chesney also left open the possibility of a return if those evaluations changed the team's current understanding. That distinction matters before UCLA turns to its backups for Saturday's game against Wisconsin: the reported expectation is serious, while the coach's public medical assessment remained unfinished.
UCLA Athletics published Chesney's full Monday media availability, covering the Oregon victory and the upcoming Wisconsin matchup.

Read source ↗ Iamaleava was hurt late in the second quarter of UCLA's 17-15 win at Oregon. Mendoza reported that he missed one play, returned briefly and then did not rejoin the offense after halftime. Ty Dieffenbach handled the second half.
Dieffenbach completed three of six passes for 43 yards and threw a touchdown pass to running back Wayne Knight. That contribution helped UCLA finish the victory and reach 5-0 in Chesney's first season.
Madden Iamaleava, Nico's younger brother, is the other backup option. Mendoza reported that Madden had appeared in relief earlier in the season, including the opening win against California. Chesney described the backup competition as a week-to-week decision, which leaves the next start unsettled in the reporting reviewed for this update.
The Bruins enter the Wisconsin week ranked No. 12 in the US LBM Coaches Poll. Their next challenge is preparing an offense around the players available while the medical review continues. Neither an exact recovery date nor a specific surgical plan was established in Chesney's public update.
